They are doing a different kind of tour this fall as an off-shoot of their regular platform of 14 dancers; they are bringing 4 dancers to Bloomington to share a concert with us! We will do the first half of the show, and they will do the second half. SAVE THE DATE!!!
There will be dance workshops when they are here, so stay posted and I will get you more details!
Mosaic IV/”Club Bellydance” Dancers will be: Mohamed Shahin, Katya Faris, Leila Gamal, Ashley Donaldon, Kathryn Derloshon, Lindsay Martinez; Bellydance Superstars: Sabah, Petite Jamila, Moria and Stephanya .
I have the great pleasure to announce that the Bellydance Superstars have selected me to sponsor them for the Indiana show for their Fall 2011 tour! They are doing a different kind of format where they partner up with a local sponsor who puts together a 45 minute set for their show, then they do the second 45 minute set. I will be partnering up with Mohamed Shahin again for our Mosaic IV, and we will be doing his choreographies! Also, Leila Gamal and Salaam will be involved. This is the dream of a lifetime, and will also be a part of my Master’s Thesis Project in Ethnomusicology at IU, of which I will be graduating in May 2012.
The date will be sometime in October, between the 1st and the 12th. Once it is confirmed, I will have the posters, fliers and registration forms available! Stay tuned!!
That’s right, Paola Blanton of Brazil (www.paolablanton.com) will be here the week of August 1st to teach two of her workshops during the week, then the Keti Sharif A-Z Slam (www.ketisharif.com), which will enable students to be evaluated by Keti’s judges online for certification! Here are the workshops that we are offering from Paola’s repetoire:
We will be posting the Keti Sharif info very soon!!! Stay posted!!!
I am sponsoring Leila Gamal of South Bend, IN for two workshops on Classic Oriental Dance, October 17th in Bloomington, IN! Both workshops will take place at Windfall Dance Studio, 1101 N. Dunn St.
Leila Gamal is an International Raqs Sharqi performer and instructor of over 30 years. Known for her emotive, soft and feminine style, she is the quintessential Classic Oriental Dancer. A dancer’s dancer, she began performing with some of the best live Arabic music in Chicago, Detroit, New York and Miami. Her mentor was the legendary Ibrahim “Bobby” Farrah of NYC. Now Leila is a much sought after instructor who is known for her kind, gentle, yet effective teaching, and her musicality which inspires dancers all over the world. Don’t miss out on this phenomenal master instructor!!!
12-2pm: Classic Oriental Dance; this is the classic form of Raqs Sharqi, or “bellydance”. Leila’s style is based in Egyptian and Lebanese, but she adds her American nuances to make it her own style. The class focuses on technique and combinations for use in improvisation, and little choreography will be used. Please bring a 3 yd silk veil. For beginner-advanced levels.

Are you looking for a one-of-a-kind bellydance costume, or “bedlah”? Are you wanting something that is made just for you that no other dancer will have and will only fit your body? Then you have come to the right place! Katya Faris can help you to order your own authentic Lebanese costume by Shahraman Designs of Beirut.
I’ve included some pictures here of costumes that you can order as is or in another color, or tailor it to suit your creativity! Shahraman can make anything you like, just send Katya a picture of what you want made, or if no picture then describe it and Katya will translate. Lebanese costumes are hard to get in the United States, and differ from Egyptian costumes in that they are known for using authentic Swarovski crystals, have more fringe and generally show more leg than other styles; the more the crystals the higher the price. These are exclusive high-end costumes for raqs sharqi dancers who want to set themselves apart from the crowd.
Costumes come with bra/belt set (or dress), skirt, veil, armbands and headbands; because they are all couture-made, prices can range anywhere between $550-1000. Also, each costume is not made until the order is placed and payment received, and can take one-two months to receive. Katya can assure you that it is well worth the wait, as there is nothing like a costume that is made just for you!
Here is a gallery of photographs to see examples of her work; please click on the image to enlarge. For more images, please see the page on the right with the title “Lebanese Bellydance Costumes by Shahraman Designs of Beirut”; there are five costumes in stock for sale there through Paypal listed there.
